44211 has arrived at Murwillumbah c 1986 with the North Coast Overnight Express. This train did not convey road vehicles, therefore the X200 rail tractor at left remains at rest, not required to shunt the Motorail wagon. At extreme left can be seen the silver-painted car-loading/unloading ramp. Wollumbin in the far distance is shrouded by cloud. (Chris Sim)

42109 at Murwillumbah.

"many of you will be aware of the private company (I think it was called Northern Rivers Railroad) which endeavoured to keep the Mur'bah line viable around 1998. They bought some retired NSW 421 class diesel locos and some former South Australian air-conditioned cars. They based themselves at Casino. They also took over the freight offering, cement, bananas etc. Though a noble effort, ultimately it wasn't a success. One of the diesels, 42109, received this lurid `rainbow' colour scheme, some liked it, some not so much. Many years later, several of these 421 diesels are privately owned by enthusiasts. One of them, 42105, has received the same livery as 42109, though there is no longer any connection with the old N.R.R."
