Name meaning : Named in honour of the Duke of York, second son of George II by Governor Lachlan Macquarie on his tour of Van Diemen's Land in 1811.
Notes : A private siding that was also referred to as Lord's Coal Mine in the 1918 and 1932 WTTs
Notes : York Plains sign is on display in the Oatlands museum. Location had a Down side crossing loop that held a goods shed and a stock pen, platform with a stores building and a station building and two railway houses. Platform is still at the site.

I remember Devonport train driver the late Peter Mills telling me that he started his railway career as a Lad Porter at the York Plains railway station when he was seventeen. He grew up on a nearby farm and use to go to the station with his father to collect and send stuff for the farm back in the day when a lot of stuff went by train. He said the station master asked him if he was looking for a job as a position had come up for a lad porter, so much to his father's disappointment he accepted the job. His father quite obviously expected him to continue working on the farm with him but Peter said that the hard life of a farmer wasn't for him and he ended up with a 40 plus years railway career instead and was the last Locomotive Driver's foreman at the Devonport Depot.
