Construction for the line was started during the Great Depression, and the formation was built as far west as Mummulgum. In 1915,
proponents first started agitating for the line to be built believing that it would open up the timber resources in the area and in 1924 the
line was surveyed.

Around 300 men commenced work for a brief time between 1928 and 1930 before construction was ceased, never to resume.
The formation left the main line at Casino at a north-facing junction just to the south of the Richmond River. It turned west and broadly
followed the Bruxner highway.

The formation is readily visible as far as Piora, with some earthworks visible at Mummulgum.

In 1928 there were already concerns about the cost - the 43 miles could be covered by a road that was prices at four hundred and
thirty thousand pounds - less than half the cost of the railway. This factor would eventually be the "nail in the coffin" as by 1934 the line
was deemed to be commercially nonviable to complete.
